The American basswood (Tilia americana), a noble and melliferous species that smells good as it passes, whose white and soft wood, easy to carve, is appreciated by artisans. Being one of the largest hardwoods in Quebec, its structure quickly reaches an honorable size, with a regular shape ready to face high winds for more than 200 years. Its large leaves, rich in nutrients and nitrogen, are an asset to energize the soils. The American basswood is mainly found along the banks of the St. Lawrence where it is comfortable in moist and drained soils, growing in partial shade, even in the shade.

Its leaves, soft and tender, make an unusual salad and cooked like spinach, you will find their mucilaginous texture pleasant. Its late, creamy yellow flowering in July does not steal the show from fruit trees, but will offer a prolonged attraction for pollinators. Fresh in salads and delicious herbal teas, among other culinary uses with medicinal virtues. Ground fruits and flowers give a sweet paste, chocolate substitute!
