In shade or sun, the black aralia (Aralia racemosa), this native herbaceous plant with its shrub-like appearance, unfolds quickly in June. Its juicy fruity clusters are the most popular, revealing the full range of flavors of the boreal, from peat bogs to resinous spruce trees. The fleshy root flavors the root beer. Replaces: Chinese five-spice blend, raspberry, almond essence, juniper. Pairing: macerated in alcohol like juniper in gin, with seitan or roasted duck, fruit salad, rice dishes, and yogurt.
