American spikenard
Aralia racemosa
In the shade or in the sun, the American spikenard (Aralia racemosa), this native herbaceous plant with its shrub-like appearance, unfolds quickly in June. We mainly enjoy its juicy fruity clusters revealing the range of flavors of the boreal, from peat bogs to resinous spruces. The fleshy root flavors the ‘root beer’. Replaces: Chinese five-spice mix, raspberry, almond essence, juniper. Pairing: macerated in alcohol like juniper in gin, seitan or lacquered duck, fruit salad, rice dishes and yogurt.
Resistant to drought and passing deer. No insect problems. Riparian strips. Native.
