The apple from apple tree ‘Sweet Sixteen’ (Malus domestica) is highly rustic, with an unmatched sugar content and a unique aroma. The apples are rather large, striped with gold and red, with firm, crunchy flesh, almost like they’re filled with crystallized sugar, perfectly balanced by acidity. To top it all off, there’s a hint of anise and a touch of vanilla-hazelnut. Since the 1970s, it has proven resistant to bacterial fire blight and scab. The double-graft of the ‘Sweet Sixteen’ / B118-B9 rootstock creates a compact tree with a dwarfing effect, while providing a stronger root system that enhances the tree’s self-sufficiency in water and nutrients, without the need for staking, unless it faces strong winds. The best of both worlds!
