Chokecherry
Prunus virginiana
The yellow-fruited chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) is a variant of the wild and native cherry, and it effectively controls shoreline or bank erosion with its extensive roots. Sprouting along waterways, its shallow roots find the moisture needed for thriving.
The long clusters of hanging flowers contribute to the pleasant scents of spring. The astringency of the small cherries is what gives them their unique charm, provided you wait until they become very dark and fully ripe. When raw, they are edible with a bit of salt or can be dehydrated. When transformed into jelly or country wine, they delight the taste buds with their sweet-tart flavor.
The yellow-fruited chokecherry is a rather rare variety.
