Columnar sugar maple 'Newton Sentry'
Acer saccharum
The columnar shape of the columnar sugar maple ‘Newton Sentry’ (Acer saccharum) allows it to be planted in areas where space is limited, benefiting from its iconic autumn color while creating a highly graphic, almost playful landscape. This native species, which tolerates pollution, adapts to any well-drained soil, even acidic, and can withstand brief flooding.
Its sweet, mineral-rich sap can be harvested through tapping, a simple operation steeped in tradition. However, it will take several decades for the columnar sugar maple ‘Newton Sentry’ to reach maturity and be ready for tapping. Keep in mind that tapping represents a wound for the tree, making it crucial to do it properly. In the meantime, its young, tender leaves can be enjoyed, particularly when pickled and stuffed like grape leaves.
