Rhubarb 'Glaskin's Perpetual'
Rheum rhabarbarum
Rhubarb ‘Glaskin’s Perpetual’ (Rheum rhabarbarum), with its massive size and generous shapes, creates a shock effect in landscaping. The need for water to irrigate its large leaves will be significant in full sun. Compost will help retain moisture and support its growth. Unless you have a well-retaining soil, reduce exposure to afternoon sun… or be ready to water. Selected varieties allow the harvest of tender stems all summer long. To prevent yellowing, cut the flower at the bud stage in order to cook it like a cauliflower with a divinely tangy taste.
Warning: Rhubarb ‘Glaskin’s Perpetual’, like sorrel, contains oxalic acid, which is beneficial when consumed in moderation, but should be avoided if you are susceptible to developing kidney stones. The leaves are toxic, and can be made into an insecticide manure.
