Blueberry 'Bluecrop'
Vaccinium corymbosum x angustifolium
The late-season blueberry ‘Bluecrop’ (Vaccinium corymbosum x angustifolium) promises large, light-blue berries with excellent flavor and prolific yields, as its name suggests. Its stems display a reddish hue, with foliage that turns vibrant red in the fall. The blueberry ‘Bluecrop’ produces fruit over an extended period of about a month.
These acid-loving plants thrive in acidic (pH 4 to 5.3), organic soils. You can recreate their natural bog environment by mixing pure sphagnum moss into the existing soil. Although blueberries can tolerate drought, their shallow roots require consistent moisture to produce juicy berries, so adding an organic mulch—especially pine mulch—will be beneficial. Good drainage is also essential.
You’ll enjoy your first harvest the year after planting, and with proper pruning of older, less productive wood at the end of winter, can continue producing for 20 to 30 years. To extend your harvest season from early to late summer, consider planting early, mid-season, and late varieties. While partially self-fertile, cross-pollination with another variety increases both the size and number of berries. A staple for edible bog landscapes.
