The blueberry ‘Northland’ (Vaccinium corymbosum x angustifolium) frequently tops taste tests in Quebec, producing small yet abundant, exceptionally sweet berries with a rich flavor reminiscent of wild blueberries a favorite among nostalgic berry lovers. This mid-season variety offers excellent yields with an extended picking window. The blueberry ‘Northland’ displays vibrant foliage in fall.

As acid-loving plants, blueberries thrive in acidic (pH 4 to 5.3), organic soil. You can recreate their bog-like environment by mixing pure sphagnum moss into the existing soil. While drought-tolerant, their shallow roots require consistent moisture for plump, juicy berries, so remember to add organic mulch. Pine mulch is especially beneficial here. Good drainage is essential.

You’ll enjoy your first harvest the year after planting, with production continuing for 20 to 30 years as long as older, declining wood is pruned at the end of winter. Combine early, mid-season, and late varieties to extend the harvest from early to late summer. Partially self-fertile, but cross-pollination with another variety produces larger, more abundant berries. A staple for edible bog landscapes.
