Chockecherry
Prunus virginiana
The chockecherry (Prunus virginiana) is a wild and native cherry tree that effectively controls erosion along riverbanks or shorelines with its extensive root system. Spreading along waterways, its shallow roots find the moisture it needs to thrive.
Its drooping flower clusters contribute to the pleasant scents of spring. The astringency of the small cherries gives them their unique charm, especially when allowed to ripen fully and darken. When raw, they can be eaten with a pinch of salt or dried. When transformed into jams or country wine, they delight the palate with their tart-sweet flavor.
