A small tree or large shrub in eastern North America, ‘Inermis’ hawthorn (Crataegus crus-galli var. inermis), as its name suggests, is thornless. It has remarkable flower clusters and fruits called cenelles, reminiscent of crabapple but rather sweet, with a high pectin content, are useful for producing jelly naturally. To do this, it’s a good idea to mix them with other, tastier fruits.

As a hedge or ornamental specimen with an artistic trunk and branches, hawthorn can live for hundreds of years.

Well rooted, it tolerates both wet and dry soils. Evolving even in semi-shade, it is in full sun that the quality and quantity of fruit reaches its peak. Infused leaves make an interesting herbal tea.
