Gooseberry
Ribes aureum
The gooseberry (ribes aureum) promises a bloom of golden trumpets brimming with honeyed nectar that perfumes the air with a vanilla essence, spiced with cinnamon sugar. The fruits that follow, increasingly sweet as summer ripens, persist long enough to be picked from stems that turn purple as fall approaches.
The shrub with its unbalanced and unpredictable shape is easy to rebalance by pruning, renewing itself well from thornless suckers. The ribes family kicks things off with its buds eager to burst into an exciting green, expected in spring. Ribes need moisture to irrigate their fruits, refreshing in summer. Sometimes fearing the heat that can harm the fruiting, they find a balance in a shaded environment, preferring a rich and very fresh soil, minimally covered with a biodegradable mulch that will limit evaporation and retain the runoff rains.
For those whose production of stone fruits or vegetable crops occupies every sunny plot, what luck to grow such delicious fruits in the shade, optimizing every square meter of land!
The gooseberry is partially self-fertile.
