American hazelnut
Corylus americana
Adorned with intriguing yellowish hanging catkins (male flowers) in spring, the American hazelnut (Corylus americana), this rounded bush suckers in dense clumps, to be controlled, interesting in a food hedge.
It is not difficult as to the host soil, whether it is rich and fresh or rather dry. It offers excellent yields, sometimes from the 3rd year, towards autumn, when it turns yellow-orange, ready to face a harsh winter. Good pollinator for other varieties of American hazel or hybrids that do not attract harmful insects.
You will need a sturdy nutcracker, because the edible hazelnuts with thick shells are well protected against pests but do not discourage squirrels. Barely larger than the long-beaked hazelnuts of the hazel tree, they appear in this shrub which can be planted alone because the American hazelnut is partially self-fertile.
