Black gum
Nyssa sylvatica
Also known as Tupelo, Black gum (Nyssa sylvatica) is a tree almost nonexistent in our region. Not afraid of humidity, heavy soils, or some shade in its early stages, it can be planted in southern Quebec where it can withstand flooding without issue.
Its glossy leaves, which turn a deep blood-red in the fall, its scaly bark, and its almost floating, airy pyramid-like structure give it undeniable ornamental appeal. Quite a character!
Black gum starts fruiting around the age of fifteen. Its dark blue fruit, with a tart and bitter taste, is primarily used in food processing, though you might find it pleasant to chew on.
