Chokeberry 'Viking'
Aronia prunifolia
Nothing attacks the chokeberry ‘Viking’ (Aronie prunifolia), bringing back fruitful spoils with berries twice as large as the species, whose decorative qualities impress as much as anything else, in all seasons.
After a nectariferous flowering that lights up on dark leaves with a healthy luster, fruits in generous bouquets will have the opportunity to improve, when the foliage turns red as frost approaches. More than you to enjoy it: the birds are not tempted, nor more than the children of the neighborhood moreover, to consume these dark rather bitter fruits, which are similar to blueberries devoid of sugar, astringent and slightly bitter but full of anthocyanin pigments. An excellent food coloring dried in powder or in powerful antioxidant juice. A witch’s fruit, which finds its interest in savory dishes, in maple desserts, marries with spices, with the sweet bitterness of chocolate and in jam with sweeter fruits.
Never seen ravaged by disease or insects, it ensures, year after year, significant harvests that you will reap in a simple quick and efficient pass, without any other maintenance than a pruning of the old branches, less inclined to bear fruit. Resilient, the aronia perfectly echoes our ideal of a maximum of harvests for a minimum of effort.
A pillar of edible landscapes for any citizen of the North who aims for food autonomy or for communities who want more food security. Holds back erosion in the riparian strip, tolerating salt spray and drought while accommodating a marshy soil, fearing neither heat nor cold. Self-fertile, the chokeberry ‘Viking’ can weather any storm on its own.
