Currant 'White Pearl'
Ribes rubrum
The currant ‘White Pearl’ (Ribes rubrum) promises jewels of crystalline pearls in celestial pendants. Young and old alike enjoy their abundant, sour and tasty juice, refreshing in the July heat. Picked whole on thornless stems, the clusters of translucent balls are enjoyed fresh, in a fruity pearl tea or in a fruit salad set with precious diamonds. Without thorns.
The ribes family kicks off with its buds eager to burst into exciting green, expected in spring. Ribes need moisture to irrigate their fruits, refreshing in summer. Sometimes fearing heat that can harm fruit setting, they find a balance in a shaded environment, preferring a rich and very fresh soil, minimally covered with a biodegradable mulch that will limit evaporation and retain runoff rain.
For those whose production of stone fruits or vegetable crops occupies every sunny plot, what luck to grow such delicious fruits in the shade, optimizing every square meter of land!
The currant ‘White Pearl’ is self-fertile.
