From the garlic and onion family, garlic chives (Allium tuberosum) easily replace one of them. It is the only one in the family that has never caused the slightest damage. This surprising apparent immunity intrigues us. We always wonder why the leek moth does not attack it, unlike all the others.

Also called tuberous chives or Chinese chives, they are featured in a host of traditional dishes from one continent to another. An aromatic bulb with a mild garlic flavor, these all-purpose chives unfurl their white flowers late in the season when most of the surrounding flowers fade, prolonging the nectar feast for butterflies while being repellent for small pests.
