The only grape variety in the seedless table grape category that is truly suited to Nordic cultivation without winter protection, the grape vine ‘Somerset’ (Vitis sp.) is one of the rare grape varieties grown on the coasts surrounding the Baltic Sea, which attests to its high resistance to cold and its commercial potential. For vertical cultivation, in pergolas or on arbors, exposed to cold, it is the most recommended.
The berries are small but numerous in compact clusters, extraordinarily early, have time to fill up with solar sugars, pink-orange when ripe, despite our sometimes short seasons. Its almost syrupy juiciness, with aromas of strawberries and spices, seduces fresh or processed into luxury juices and jams. Resistant to diseases, this cultivar is tempting for ornamental horticulture. Often drastic, the pruning of the grape vine ‘Somerset’ allows edible leaves to be picked. Tenderized and salted in brine, they will make local vine leaf rolls, traditionally stuffed with seasoned rice. Hardy hybrid cultivar, crossed with our native shore vine among others. Self-fertile.
