Similar in every way to our native mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia), the Russian mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia rossica) is a strain of the bird cherry originating from cold and remote regions, known for its long-tested and proven resistance. It compensates for the usual sensitivity of the family to bacterial blight episodes, making it a reliable and durable choice with very hard wood.
Both its white flower clusters and its orange fruit bunches offer an exotic spectacle, much like its tropical punch flavor, which can be enjoyed after bletting followed by cooking or even through alcoholic maceration.
The Russian mountain ash is of a good size, tolerates acidity and clay soils, as long as the drainage is good, and sometimes takes on a lovely golden hue in the fall.
