Nannyberry
Viburnum lentago
6 m       3,8 m      Hardiness zone 2

The nannyberry (Viburnum lentago) produces the largest fruits of the family, relatively pulpy and very sweet. The large multi-trunk shrub with a rounded shape, sometimes classified in the category of small trees, is always in its Sunday best, with abundant flowering in balls of scent, as if filled with creamy honey in waxy foliage that turns purple-red in the fall, while the fruits still hang, changing from pink to the blue of the deep sea, concentrating their sugars to better unpack their cherry flavor coated in almond paste, which can be enjoyed as a fresh candy from nature, but which can also replace dried fruits such as cranberries, raisins or cherries, in all kinds of recipes, from morning cereals to muffins to couscous.

With shallow roots, the nannyberry relies on the presence of humidity that will allow it to avoid droughts that are too long for its proper development. Ideal for forming hedges because of its suckering which will have to be controlled otherwise. Adapts well to heavy and clayey soils. Riparian strips. Native. Cross-pollination is required for its fruiting.
