Pear trees (Pyrus communis) are generally easier to grow than other commercial fruits and are a good choice for heavy clay soils. They are less targeted by insects and require less pruning for maintenance. The pear tree ‘Loma’ is partially self-fertile and has an early harvest. No diseases have been reported.
The fruit is small to medium-sized, round and flattened, with a red blush on a green background. The pear is refreshing, as its thick, astringent skin reveals juicy, melting flesh with a touch of acidity balanced by a high sugar content. It has a surprising fragrance. It can be stored for up to a month, gaining sweetness while losing some acidity and astringency over time.
The pear tree ‘Loma’ was discovered in Grande-Baie, Saguenay.
