Russet buffaloberry
Shepherdia canadensis
The russet buffaloberry (Shepherdia canadensis) is known for its small, tart, edible red berries and silvery leaves. The bitterness of the berries can be mellowed after the first frost. They can be eaten fresh, but are often used to make jams, jellies, or dried for later consumption. The fruits are usually harvested in late summer and early fall, from July to September. Their taste often improves after the first frost, as with many other wild berries, making them sweeter and less astringent.
