Very little thorn, recently arrived from Russia, the sea buckthorn ‘Chuyskaya’ (female) (Hippophae rhamnoides) ripens before ‘Leikora’. It holds records for extreme yields. Even if it remains a challenge, it is a variety of choice for hand picking, knowing that a person can harvest up to 18 kg in 1 hour of these larger than average sea buckthorns. It is your northern citrus fruit, with notes of pineapple and passion fruit, to be eaten fresh and easy to preserve in juice all year round. Exploding with vitamin C, it replaces the omnipresent lemon in so many recipes, from a simple vinaigrette, to meringue pie and seafood. One of the rare fruit trees to offer almost exaggerated juicy yields in poor soil, sea buckthorn is satisfied with atmospheric nitrogen.
Their fine silver foliage turns heads. As the summer season passes, the branches become colored and bulge with orange clusters, causing stiff necks for the entire neighborhood. For pollination purposes, the sea buckthorn ‘Chuyskaya’ will need a male such as ‘Gnom‘. The male produces the pollen. The female bears the fruit. For optimal yields, the male pollen, dispersed by the wind, fertilizes at least 6 females, depending on the planting pattern, which should respect a maximum spacing of 30 meters between the male and the most distant female, and possibly on the direction of the prevailing winds. The vigorous suckering of the sea buckthorn requires some control. Tolerates pollution and salt spray. Nitrogen fixer.
